Hinkamp, Alice Cornelia Edwards

Age 90, dear mother and grandmother passed away peacefully, December 23, 2016. Alice was born in Kansas City, Missouri on February 1, 1926. Alice attended Sunset Hill School in Kansas City, graduating with highest honors before attending Wellesley College in Massachusetts. Upon graduating in 1947 she met Harvey J. White, her first husband and father of her four children. After living in California and New York, Alice and her family settled in Birmingham, Michigan in 1957, where she was a strong community leader and successful businesswoman. As an Elder and Member of Session at the First Presbyterian Church, she devoted countless hours to the fellowship and religious education of the congregation. Alice began her career with Massachusetts Mutual as a Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant in 1975 and was awarded degrees in her field from the American College, Bryn Mawr, PA. Gaining national recognition as a leader in the company, she was given numerous awards and invited to speak at many seminars and educational conferences on financial planning. Alice was married to James B. Hinkamp, of Birmingham, Michigan in 1985 and they ultimately retired to his hometown of Holland, Michigan in 1997. When Alice retired her business, she turned to travel and the enjoyment of her and Jim’s many grandchildren.

Alice had a home at Pinecrest, her extended family’s property on Crystal Lake in Beulah, Michigan. As a founding board member of both the Grand Traverse Land Conservancy and Crystal Lake Watershed Fund, she worked to conserve Crystal Lake water quality and natural areas throughout the northwest Michigan region.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ned S. Edwards and Alice Wolfe Edwards. Alice is survived by her husband, James B. Hinkamp; her son, Harvey J. White, Jr., MD and wife Alice B. Lloyd of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, NM, granddaughters Martha and Haley; her son Laurence E. White and wife Carole L. White of Libertyville, IL, grandsons Eric and Alexander; her daughter Margaret W. Teall and husband Graham L. Teall of Ann Arbor, MI, granddaughters Clara and Gillian; and her daughter Carolyn White of Houston, grandchildren Jasper and Corinna Snow. Her sister, Marian E. Doane of Lancaster, PA and brother, Ned W. Edwards of Beulah, MI, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive her.

Alice was a true world traveler with a keen sense of adventure and discovery. She was a loving leader with compassion for others. Alice was a talented musician and pianist who gifted a love of music to her family. It is safe to say that Alice (or Ace, as her family knows her) mastered anything she set her mind to.

A Celebration of Life for Alice will be at Freedom Village, Holland, MI on January 14, 2017 at 2PM. A Memorial Service for her Crystal Lake community will be planned for the summer.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be provided in Alice E. Hinkamp’s name to:

• First Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, Michigan;

• Grand Traverse Land Conservancy, Traverse City, Michigan
