Abby Price passed away October 3, 2017 at American House in Holland.

Abby was born to Cyrus Ritter Funk and Genevieve Schell Funk on June 8, 1930, in Niles, Michigan, delivered by her great aunt, Dr. Abby Henderson.

Abby attended school in Niles and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1952 with a teaching degree. At U of M she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority where she made many lifelong friends.

Abby taught elementary school in Ann Arbor, Niles and Dallas, Texas. She taught children with special needs in Ohio and substitute taught in Holland.

Abby married William Earl Price in Niles on October 23, 1954 after a brief romance that led to 58 years of life together. Bill passed away March 7, 2013. Bill and Abby had 3 children: Lynn (Noel) Smolenyak of Charlevoix, Ann (Randy) Schutt of Holland, Rob (Katie) Price of Cary, Illinois, 9 grandchildren: Ellise and Karinne Smolenyak, Leah (Scott) Warner, Jessica (Joshua) Demorow, Marie and Neal Schutt, Charlie, Gretchen and Teddy Price, 5 great grandchildren: Sullivan, Oliver and Isla Warner, Noah and Arlo Demorow. Abby is also survived by many nieces, nephews and special friends. She was preceded in death by her brother William (Marcia) Funk, sisters-in-law Frances (James) Hallan and Jeanne (Clarence) Prince, and canine loves Laddie and Sammy.

Abby was an active volunteer and served many organizations, including Hope Church, Holland Hospital’s Margaret P. Hummer Guild, the Holland Planning Commission, Holland Community Foundation Board and Holland League of Women Voters, and co-chaired the successful Holland West Middle School bond issue.

Abby was a devoted wife, mother and “Nana.” Her children remember her attending nearly all sporting events and special school activities. An avid golf and bridge player, she had a hole-in-one at age 17 and was the 1967 women’s club champion at Heather Downs Country Club in Toledo, Ohio. Abby loved being with family and friends. She was a natural hostess and wanted all to feel welcome and comfortable.

You may visit the family on Friday, October 20, from 4:30 to 6:30pm at Mulder Chapel, Dykstra Funeral Homes, 188 West 32nd Street in Holland.

Please join Abby’s family in celebration of her life at 1:00pm on Saturday, October 21, at Hope Church, 77 W. Eleventh Street.
